Sterile Standards: Best Practices to Support a Culture of Safety

This course illuminates the importance of consistency in sterile surgical protocols and also recognizes the patient's perspective on safe care. A pivotal workplace scenario follows a patient's concerns, seeing different surgical practices between a general dentist and an oral surgeon. The course describes six critical steps for surgical protocols: written plans, hand antisepsis, surgical gloves, sterile water, antibiotic stewardship, and communicating safe care to patients. Summaries detail each step's rationale, techniques, training requirements, and necessary supplies. Team huddle resources are designed to promote active engagement in learning with a discussion guide, photo and video quizzes, key takeaways, and references to trusted sources.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• Explain the principles of surgical hand antisepsis, including its rationale, tech­niques, required training, and necessary supplies.
• Describe the use of sterile surgeon’s gloves for surgical procedures.
• Describe the use of sterile irrigation instruments and water in a clinical dental setting.
• Practice and communicate surgical standards, including antibiotic stewardship, and the responsible use of antibiotics.
