Part 1: Dental Workplace Safety Hazards – Employer and Employee Insights

This course is part one of a two-part series on dental workplace safety hazards. Emphasized here are three types of hazard exposures inherent in dental settings: X-rays, nitrous oxide gases during sedation dentistry, and noise levels from dental devices. Strategies are presented to help employers and employees assess, monitor, communicate, and reduce exposure risks.  

A workplace scenario supports compelling reasons to monitor hazard exposures, with four steps to apply in practice. Charts offer tips on how to track exposure to X-rays, nitrous oxide, and noise levels. Included are a hazard protection training checklist, a team huddle discussion guide, key takeaways, and a photo and video quiz. Cited are references to trusted resources. This course will help you stay updated and committed to workplace safety.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• Assess and monitor X-ray and nitrous oxide exposure risks.
• Discuss noise risks and hearing safety.
• Identify monitoring technology (dosimeters, noise level testing, recordkeeping).
• Communicate safety risks with training, labels, and signage.
