Patient Safety: “First We Will Do No Harm”

How does a dental team build a patient-centered safety program and convey that culture to patients? A workplace scenario shows how overheard staff remarks are interpreted by a patient as disregard for patient safety, highlighting the patient’s perception of worker actions. This course reveals the value of building a safety culture from worker and patient perspectives. It presents five strategies, with charts and workflow training tips, to help the ICC create a comprehensive safety program. A comparison chart contrasts OSHA infection control regulations and CDC recommendations, with references to trusted resources and regulatory standards. A video quiz, team discussion guide, and key takeaways foster interactive learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• Compare the regulations and guidelines that primarily protect workers to those that primarily protect patients.
• Consider the patients’ perspectives on hand hygiene practices, glove protocol, and cross-contamination prevention.
• Identify positive and negative examples of verbal communications that inform patients about a dental culture of safety.
• Identify the potential consequences of non-compliance with patient and worker safety practices and the impact on a culture of safety.
