Workplace Safety: Preparing for the Unexpected, Who Will Take the Lead?

A workplace scenario exemplifies the leadership role, skills, and duties of a newly appointed Infection Control Coordinator (ICC) during discovering and correcting unsafe dental unit waterline (DUWL) conditions. Strategies show how to assess, manage, and lead a DUWL safety program and include a sample DUWL Standard Operating Procedure. The issue explores how earning advanced training to be Certified in Dental Infection Prevention and Control can strengthen clarity and confidence when taking on the role of ICC. Featured are creative ways to bring safety topics into the morning team huddle. Included are references to trusted resources and regulatory standards. A video quiz, team discussion guide, and key takeaways foster interactive learning. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• Define the job role and value of the Dental Infection Control Coordinator.
• Identify the pathway to becoming Certified in Dental Infection Preven­tion and Control through the Association for Dental Safety (ADS) and the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Dental Infection Prevention and Control certification program.
• Describe the ICC’s role in managing a dental water safety program.
• Describe the potential consequences of not managing dental water quality and not having a qualified leader in dental safety.
