Antibiotics are an important weapon to help dental healthcare personnel and medical team members prevent and manage infections. However, antibiotics are frequently over-prescribed, and the development of drug-resistant infections have become an urgent worldwide public health problem. This educational session will address updates in antibiotic stewardship and provide tools for all stakeholders in oral healthcare settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe updates in antibiotic stewardship efforts for dental healthcare settings.    
  2. Apply new tools to support antibiotic stewardship.    
  3. Compare and contrast prescribing patterns for the treatment of odontogenic infections and antibiotic prophylaxis.

Elaine Bailey, PharmD

Dr. Elaine Bailey is the Executive Director of the Michigan Antibiotic Resistance Reduction (MARR) Coalition and has served on the MARR Advisory Council since 2000. She earned her doctorate of pharmacy degree and completed fellowship training in anti-infective pharmacotherapy at Wayne State University. Her professional career has been devoted to improving antibiotic use and included positions in academia, clinical practice, and the pharmaceutical industry. Through her work with the MARR Coalition, her goal is to educate the wider public and healthcare communities to be stewards of antibiotics in an effort to curb the public health crisis of antibiotic resistance.

Marie Fluent, DDS, CDIPC

Dr. Fluent is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her dental career spans 35 years and includes roles as dentist, both as an associate and practice owner, infection control coordinator, office manager, and dental assistant. Additionally, she has extensive experience and expertise as a dental inflection control clinical instructor, educator, speaker, author, and consultant. Dr. Fluent is passionate and deeply committed to improving dental infection control and patient safety. Through her writing, webinars, and invited lectures, she has educated thousands of dental professionals and students nationally and internationally. Dr. Fluent has written numerous peer-reviewed articles on infection control in the dental setting, OSHA compliance, and responsible antibiotic prescribing. She has also earned the CDIPC certification.
