2024 OSAP Annual Conference - Analysis of Attitudes and Actions Related to Dental Unit Waterlines (On-Demand)

Attitudes and actions related to dental unit waterline maintenance and testing vary greatly in the dental profession.  These variabilities were recently revealed by a survey conducted by the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute. This program will focus on the behavioral aspects that influence the dental professionals’ attitudes and actions, impacting DUWL management and compliance to best practices.  A panel of industry experts will discuss ways to improve gaps in knowledge and attitudes as well as explore actions that can be taken to equip dental professionals with the skills necessary to maintain high standards of water quality in their practices, promoting patient safety and regulatory compliance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Analyze and interpret the results of a behavioral survey identifying prevalent attitudes and actions among dental professionals regarding their understanding of dental unit waterline maintenance and testing.
  2. Explore the behavioral actions surrounding regulatory requirements and recommendations related to DUWL compliance
  3. Generate ideas to ensure understanding of relevant guidelines, standards, and regulations for the various stakeholders involved

Amanda Hill, BSDH, RDH, CDIPC

Amanda Hill, BSDH, RDH, CDIPC, is an enthusiastic speaker, innovative consultant, and award-winning author. She brings over 25 years of clinical dental hygiene and now provides the dental industry with enthusiastic education. Amanda has authored over one hundred articles and had the most-read article of 2020 in Dr. Bicuspid. Recipient of OSAP’s Emerging Infection Control Leader award, she is affectionately known as the Waterline Warrior. David Carsten, DDS

Dr. Carsten is the Chair of the Washington State Dental Commission, Chair of the Infection Control Committee, and an Assistant Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Ramneek Rai, DDS

Dr. Ramneek Rai is the Director of Health and Safety and Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF School of Dentistry. She draws her knowledge and expertise in dental infection prevention from the experience of 10+ years of private practice and providing health and safety oversight for 17 clinics that fall under UCSF Dental Center. Dr. Rai has been active in Academia since 2015, teaching infection prevention, control and safety practices, observing and providing support to dental students and residents. She has been an active member of OSAP since 2018 and has served in the role of Director on the OSAP Association Board since 2021. Currently, she is serving as the Secretary to the OSAP Board.

Ronda Anderson

Ronda Anderson has been working in dentistry for 30 years.  She started working in a dental office and then for a dental dealer. She built many offices, including two mobile vans. She also assisted Community Health Centers across Nebraska in setting up different ways to serve our underserved population. From helping set up protocols for a WIC-based Sealant/Fluoride clinic that was provided across the state to assisting the University of Nebraska with their free Give Kids a Smile Dental Day and the Mission of Mercy. She was also blessed to be part of 3 Dental mission trips. Two to Honduras and 1 to Haiti only two months after the earthquake to help a dentist evaluate a site for a dental clinic. At one time, she also served on the Nebraska Advisory Board for Teledentistry. As part of this, she has brought her expertise in OSHA and Infection Control that she learned to help her customers become more compliant and keep their patients safe. She continues to provide this expertise as a speaker to the University of Nebraska Senior Dental Students Annually, where she lectures on Government compliance and has authored a chapter on the subject in the textbook they use for their practice management course. She provides CE on OSHA and Infection Control for many Dental Organizations in her region and recently was a speaker at the National APIC meeting on Efficiencies in Dental Instrument Processing and was on a panel at The National Mobile and Teledentistry Conference. She brings this knowledge to work with her daily as a Regional Account Manager for HuFriedyGroup in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota as she makes it her mission to leave every office safer for it's employees and patients.

Sam Hammarback

Sam Hammarback is an experienced Technical Support Specialist with HuFriedyGroup, where he supports all dental waterline products and treatment systems. With more than a decade of experience in the industry, Sam specializes in dental water treatment products, equipment, protocol creation, and troubleshooting water systems.

He has partnered with dental offices and equipment companies around the world, including Australia, where he assisted in potential water system protocols for children’s dental treatment and remote offices. Sam also serves as an aviation flight instructor and volunteers as a safety officer and pilot for an aircraft demonstration team operating helicopters at airshows and other public events.

Sam and his wife currently reside in Wisconsin. Together, they own Skyhammer Creations and make handcrafted leather goods for Renaissance Festivals. His personal interests include blacksmithing, motorcycles, stout beers, and his three cats.

Sarah Stream, MPH, CDIPC, CDA, FADAA

Sarah Stream began her journey in 2007 as a dental assistant, where her dedication and passion quickly propelled her forward. Over the years, she earned her CDA and further advanced her expertise, becoming a dynamic educator committed to public health and addressing the evolving needs of the dental community. With a specialization in dental infection control, she achieved her CDIPC certification and earned the prestigious 2024 Emerging Infection Control Leader Award from the Association for Dental Safety. Sarah is involved in shaping industry standards, serving as an active member of several ADA Standards Committees focused on sterilization safety, dental unit waterlines, and dental instruments. Recently, she took on an exciting new role as Education Product Manager at the DANB and DALE Foundation, where she continues to make a lasting impact through innovative educational initiatives.
