The session will:

  • Provide a brief description of microbial biofilms that can develop in Dental Unit Waterlines (DUWL) and thus the need for disinfection and maintenance of DUWL
  • Highlight the CDC Recommendations for Dental Water Quality and recommendations for monitoring dental water quality with routine testing
  • Highlight guidance from the FDA and OSAP’s White paper on Dental Water Quality as a guiding resource
  • Provide a broad overview and comparison of products available for dental unit waterline treatment and maintenance in terms of method used, active chemical agent and indications for use
  • Provide a description and comparison of different testing methods available for clinical monitoring of water quality
  • DUWL management best practices including impact of periods of non-use, extended closures

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Recognize the need for DUWL disinfection and monitoring and identify resources that provide recommendations and guidance on DUWL disinfection
  2. Describe different products that are available for DUWL treatment, including water purification systems; Describe various methods available for testing water quality
  3. Describe and apply DUWL management best practices

Ramneek Rai, DDS

Ramneek Rai, DDS, is a general dentist who has been in private practice for more than 10 years and has been serving in the role of Director of Health and Safety at UCSF School of Dentistry providing health and safety oversight for seventeen clinics that fall under UCSF Dental Center. She also serves as an assistant clinical professor and has been active in Academia at UCSF School of Dentistry since 2015, teaching infection prevention, control and safety practices, observing, and supporting Predoctoral students and residents. She has been an active member of ADS (formerly known as OSAP) since 2018 and has served in the role of Director on the ADS Association Board since 2021 and Secretary to the Foundation and the Association Boards FY 2022-2023. Currently, she is serving as the Chair-elect to the ADS Association Board.
