The dental assisting profession has reached a pivotal moment. The shortage of qualified dental assistants has lasted years and affects access to and quality of care. It’s time for the dental community to envision a new path forward. This session presents a picture of the potential future of dental assisting, including recommendations from the Dental Assisting Professional Model Workgroup, a collaborative initiative of dental professionals across the field. The presentation will highlight the Workgroup’s recommendations related to infection control and radiation safety, along with standardization of expectations related to dental assisting training. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Describe the current landscape of dental assisting requirements across the country.
  2. Summarize the proposed professional model for dental assistants and the ways in which the model builds on the most common approaches among states.
  3. Describe how the professional model supports infection control education and training in the dental practice.

Katherine Landsberg

Katherine Landsberg is Director of Government Relations for the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), the ADA-recognized national certification board for dental assistants, and its affiliate, the DALE Foundation. Katherine joined DANB in 2005, providing high-level expertise in strategic project management, executive communications, and governance support. In 2012, Katherine transitioned to her current role managing DANB’s government relations area, a role which brings her into frequent contact with executive directors and staff of state dental boards. Katherine oversees the compilation and publication of two DANB publications containing regulatory information about the practice of dental assisting in each state, and she is frequently asked to consult on questions about dental assisting regulation nationwide from state regulators and other stakeholders.  Prior to joining DANB, Katherine worked as a communications manager for a technology company focused on providing affordable Internet connectivity in the K-12 education market. Katherine holds a BA from Northwestern University. She is a native of New Jersey and has made Illinois her home for 30 years.
