Dental infection prevention (IP) has deeper roots and is more well-defined than antibiotic stewardship in the dental setting. Regulatory and public health agencies have provided up-to date IP guidance, recommendations, and standards to assist with policies and programs. Dental antibiotic stewardship (AS) practices however are comparatively newer and less well-defined. Structured AS programs exist for other healthcare settings such as hospitals, critical care, and outpatient settings. However, the dental AS practices are incorporated within the general outpatient core elements. Thus, dental stewardship programs are loosely knit, with minimal guidance and/or state dental board mandates. This session will discuss the relationship between IP and AS and compare shared goals, strategies, and programs in the dental setting.
