Today, dentists are still the third highest prescribers of antibiotics in the United States, accounting for about 10% of all outpatient prescriptions. They often prescribe antibiotics to treat dental pain and swelling, and to prevent infections. However, some studies suggest that many of these prescriptions are unnecessary. The Association for Dental Safety (ADS) has been tasked by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with advancing the availability of education on dental antibiotic stewardship. One strategy ADS is implementing to achieve this goal is to increase the number of speakers to support local, state and national webinars and conferences on dental antibiotic stewardship resources, chairside prescribing tools, and clinical practice guidelines. This interactive workshop will train a cohort of clinicians and consultants to deliver a new peer-reviewed professionally developed presentation, and accompanying resources designed to help move the needle on antibiotic prescribing in dentistry. Participants should have basic familiarity with antibiotic stewardship and be interested in advocating for this critical patient safety strategy through lectures and presentations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Share resources to train oral health team members, leaders, consultants, and infection control experts on how to incorporate antibiotic stewardship education into their practice.
2. Describe current & emerging issues related to antibiotic stewardship in oral health care settings.
3. Demonstrate new resources & tools to facilitate compliance with clinical practice guidelines related to antibiotic use.
