Private practitioners – especially practice owners – are juggling countless responsibilities and too often safety falls by the wayside. To support pediatric dental practices, the Safety & Quality Improvement Committee of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) formed a Private Practice Workgroup charged with identifying, packaging, and promoting the most essential resources for ensuring a safe environment for the dental team and patients and families. The Private Practice Workgroup used a Delphi process to prioritize topics for inclusion, then performed a landscape review of existing resources on these topics, and finally selected the most applicable and useful tools to include in a toolkit. Topics include managing medical emergencies, sedation safety, dental unit waterline management, medication safety, antibiotic stewardship, office safety and security, and more. Where there was a dearth of existing resources, the Workgroup is collaborating with subject matter experts to develop new tools. This session will feature a preview of the toolkit and include time for attendee feedback and suggestions. The toolkit is designed with busy practice owners in mind, offering examples of protocols that are easily implementable, suggestions on how to divide these responsibilities across the dental team, and feasible action steps for promoting a culture of safety in private practice.
