An effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program is the backbone of patient and staff safety, but it doesn't run itself. This course highlights the critical role of a dedicated IPC Coordinator and will move beyond the basics to explore the strategic advantages of appointing a defined IPC leader. The session will provide a clear roadmap for identifying the right individual for this crucial role, outlining their essential responsibilities, and, most importantly, how practice leaders can empower them with the authority, resources, and support needed to ensure success and sustained compliance.

Learning Objectives:

• Review infection prevention and control (IPC) compliance by dental providers through data gathered in a nationwide survey
• Discuss the measurable benefits of having a designated IPC coordinator oversee the IPC program, including improved compliance
• Develop strategies to support the IPC coordinator through clear role definition, dedicated time, ongoing training, and leadership backing

Sarah Stream began her journey in 2007 as a dental assistant, where her dedication and passion quickly propelled her forward. Over the years, she earned her CDA and further advanced her expertise, becoming a dynamic educator committed to public health and addressing the evolving needs of the dental community. With a specialization in dental infection control, she achieved her CDIPC certification and earned the prestigious 2024 Emerging Infection Control Leader Award from the Association for Dental Safety. Sarah is involved in shaping industry standards, serving as an active member of several ADA Standards Committees focused on sterilization safety, dental unit waterlines, and dental instruments. Recently, she took on an exciting new role as Education Product Manager at the DANB and DALE Foundation, where she continues to make a lasting impact through innovative educational initiatives.

Richard Hankins, MD

Dr. Hankins is an assistant professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is an associate medical director of Infection Control and Epidemiology, with an emphasis on device-related infections and dentistry. He also serves as an associate medical director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and is now the President of the Nebraska Infection Control Network.
