From Prescriptions to Prosecution: Avoiding Antibiotic Lawsuits in Dentistry (On-Demand)

Recent evidence points at a regular, inappropriate use of antibiotics in dentistry. However, as far as inappropriate antibiotic use is concerned, dentists often describe it as a “gray area”: decision making under uncertainty, ethical challenges associated with the clinical judgement varying from patient to patient, depending on their vulnerability and risk population they are in, and clinical decisions influenced by the patient's physician or specialist.

This program will examine recent legal cases involving dentists over inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics. A practicing attorney will serve as a reactor to address audience questions. Participants will leave with a more complete understanding of the legal landscape, potential tools to facilitate communication between dentist and physician and more confidence in navigating this evolving patient safety issue.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand the context for recent court cases surrounding inappropriate dental prescribing of antibiotics.
  2. Describe new tools to help dentists better communicate with specialists and patients regarding the need for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures.
  3. Compare and contrast the risks and benefits associated with using antibiotic therapy in patients.
