Designed for all dental professionals (dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office staff), this presentation demystifies the biological effects of ionizing radiation to empower participants in making informed decisions regarding radiographic techniques and patient protection.

We will explore the mechanisms of radiation interaction with biological tissues, discuss dose-response relationships, and examine the potential risks and benefits of dental imaging. A primary focus of this session will be equipping dental teams with the essential communication skills needed to confidently discuss radiation dose risks with patients.

The session will also cover practical strategies for minimizing radiation exposure and adhering to the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. Aligning with best practices in infection prevention and control, we will tackle the current hot topic of patient shielding. This includes navigating the latest American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines on the use of lead and lead-equivalent aprons, as well as understanding the critical role of manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU).
